History

The VSRA has recently started a historical section and hopes to provide information on the development of the square since the 18th century when the first houses were built. Over the years the square has had many famous residents, in part due to its proximity to the Houses of Parliament. It is surprising, therefore that few, if any, blue plaques can be seen around the square. As part of the research process we would very much like to hear from residents about the history of their part of the square, so please contact the historical secretary

Blue Plaques are approved by English Heritage. A guide to how to apply for one can be found
here. One of the most important criteria is that the person being commemorated has been dead for 20 years or have passed the centenary of their birth, whichever is earlier.
Information about Green Plaques, a scheme specific to Westminster, can be found
here.
